Meatball Curry

Sri Lankan Meatball Curry

For the meatballs:

  • 500g minced meat (chicken, beef, pork or lamb)

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon lemon/lime juice

For the curry:

  • 3 tablespoons oil

  • 4 cardamom pods
  • 4 cloves
  • 4cm piece cinnamon
  • 1 curry leaves sprig
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3cm piece ginger, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 2 teaspoons roasted curry powder

Method

  • Prepare the Meatballs – Place all the meatball ingredients into a large bowl. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  • Shape the Meatballs – Wet your hands with cold water and roll the mixture into balls. Arrange them in a dish, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate.
  • Heat the Oil – In a large saucepan over medium heat, add oil and warm it up.
  • Flavor the Oil – Once hot, add cardamom pods, cloves, cinnamon, and curry leaves. Fry for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Sauté the Aromatics – Add the chopped onions and cook until translucent. Stir in the chopped ginger, garlic, and tomato. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Add the Spices – Stir in chili powder, pepper, turmeric, and salt. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and loses its raw flavor.
  • Simmer the Sauce – Pour in water and let it cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce begins to boil and thicken.
  • Incorporate Coconut Milk – Add the coconut milk and mix well. Adjust salt to taste. Allow the sauce to simmer gently.
  • Enhance with Curry Powder – Stir in roasted curry powder and simmer for another minute or two.
  • Cook the Meatballs – Place the meatballs into the sauce, cover, and simmer on low heat for 5 minutes.
  • Coat and Cook – Gently turn the meatballs to ensure they are well coated in the curry. Cover and continue to cook for 15 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked through.
  • Garnish and Serve – Sprinkle with chopped coriander/cilantro and serve hot with rice.

Enjoy !!!
